Marieke is general director of the Dutch Red Cross. The Red Cross provides assistance in the Netherlands, for example in the event of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the reception of refugees. The Dutch Red Cross is part of the international Red Cross network. This means that they are active in various countries in preventing and combating disasters. This is done in collaboration with the local Red Cross Societies and the International Red Cross.

Marieke became a board member because she appreciates the attention the Roosevelt Foundation can give to courageous people around the world through the Four Freedoms Awards. During the ceremonies in Middelburg she felt what lack of freedom does to people. That is why Marieke found Maria Ressa's online contribution in 2020 very moving. The courage that Maria shows while being personally attacked is incredible.
