Since its founding in 1945, the United Nations has been working with great dedication for international peace and security, for international cooperation and to promote respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. The United Nations has existed for 75 years and its founding and history are closely intertwined with the lives of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his wife Eleanor. President Roosevelt is considered the main architect of the United Nations. Eleanor Roosevelt was the first chair of the UN Commission on Human Rights, which oversaw the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will receive the International Four Freedoms Award in Middelburg. The Roosevelt Foundation greatly appreciates this and sees his presence as an expression of global recognition of the United Nations' commitment to the protection and promotion of the four freedoms for all people everywhere.
