The award for Freedom from Fear was given to Mr Leoluca Orlando, mayor of Palermo (Sicily), for his unwavering dedication to defending human rights in general and the humane treatment of refugees in particular. During his career, he successfully and with great determination fought against the mafia, corruption and the death penalty. For many years, he has been the most prominent advocate of a welcoming and humane approach to immigration in Italy and Europe. Under his leadership as mayor, corruption in Palermo's city government has been tackled and the city has been transformed into a vibrant and culturally interesting place to live and work and an attractive destination to visit. As a politician, administrator and human being, he considers it his responsibility to welcome and treat refugees on Palermo's quays in a humanitarian manner. Under his leadership, the municipality promotes integration projects such as Molti Volti, a collaboration of startups cum restaurant, among others.
