Algerian Mr Lakhdar Brahimi received the Freedom of Speech Award in 2008 for his commitment to peace, freedom and democracy around the world. He also received the award for international cooperation. Mr Brahimi fought against colonisation and opposed military intervention. He continued to seek non-violent solutions to international conflicts. He also campaigned for Algeria's independence.

Politician and diplomat Brahimi was born in Algeria in 1934. He studied law and political science in Algeria. During the war of independence, he fought on the side of the Front Libération Nationale in Jakarta. After Algeria gained independence, Mr Brahimi became under-secretary-general of the Arab League and foreign minister. He was also diplomatic adviser to Algeria's president. He later became a United Nations (UN) delegate and sent to Syria on behalf of the UN. Mr. Brahimi is a member of The Elders.
