In 2010, Mr Gareth Evans accepted the Freedom from Fear Award. As Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs, he was one of the key drafters of the peace treaty between Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge in 1991. In addition, Mr Evans was also involved in the Chemical Weapons Convention.

Politician, academic and lawyer Gareth Evans was born in 1944 in Melbourne, Australia. He graduated from the University of Melbourne and University of Oxford. Mr Evans then worked as a lawyer in Melbourne, where he specialised in trade unions. From 1971 to 1976, he taught law at the University of Melbourne as a lecturer. In addition, Mr Evans was active in politics. Besides being Minister of Foreign Affairs, he also carried out work for the United Nations. For instance, Mr Evans was chair of the International Crisis Group and co-chair of the UN International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty (ICSS). Furthermore, he was an advisor to the UN Secretary-General on the Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change. Finally, Mr Evans was chairman of the International Commission opposed to nuclear proliferation. In 1999, he stopped being politically active.
