The Freedom of Worship Award was given in 2010 to lawyer Asma Jahangir for defending human and women's rights, rights of religious minorities and children in Pakistan. She also founded the Human Rights Organisation in Pakistan.

More about Mr Asma Jahangir

Asma Jahangir was born in 1952 in Pakistan. She and other women opened the first women-driven law firm in Pakistan. This was followed in 1980 by AGHS Legal Aid, a centre for free legal advice. Mr Jahangir was Pakistan's first woman to become president of the Bar Association of the Supreme Court. During General Zia-ul-Haq's administration, she was involved in a number of court cases. Her efforts led to house arrest: Mr Jahangir and her family also received death threats. One of her most notable cases was her defence of Safia Bibi. This 13-year-old blind girl had been raped by her employer in 1983. Mr Jahangir managed to get the verdict, the death penalty for Bibi, overturned. This means the sentence became invalid. In 2016, Mr Jahangir was appointed United Nations (UN) special rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran. She did this work in Pakistan until her death in 2018.
