The Four Freedoms Awards Ceremony takes place on the 11th of April 2024. It promises to be another beautiful and impressive edition.
The Four Freedoms Medals are presented each year to men, women and organizations whose achievements have demonstrated a commitment to the principles which President Roosevelt proclaimed in his historic speech to Congress on 6 January 1941. In this speech, he said that for democracy to survive and prosper, people around the world are entitled to four freedoms: freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear. Important words that have not lost any of their value and meaning even after 83 years.
Earlier Freedoms Medals were awarded to some of the most distinguished world citizens of their time, including Harry S. Truman, H.R.H. Princess Juliana of The Netherlands, John F. Kennedy, Nelson Mandela, J. William Fulbright, Arthur Miller, Jimmy Carter, former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, Malala Yousafzai, Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and dr. Angela Merkel.

What are the Four Freedoms Awards?
The Four Freedoms Awards are organized every two years in Middelburg. This is a large-scale event with more than 600 guests. The event consists of various parts, including a dinner the evening before the ceremony, the ceremony itself where the Four Freedoms Awards are presented, followed by lunch and the Four Freedoms Meet Up.
What are the Four Freedoms?
On January 6, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his State of the Union address to the United States Congress. In this speech he spoke about four freedoms, namely:
- Freedom of Speech
- Freedom of Worship
- Freedom from Want
- Freedom from Fear
Who is the organizer of the Four Freedoms Awards?
The Roosevelt Foundation is responsible for organizing the Four Freedoms Awards every two years in Middelburg.
Who does the Roosevelt Foundation collaborate with to organize the Four Freedoms Awards?
The Roosevelt Foundation organizes the Four Freedoms Awards in close collaboration with the Province of Zeeland. In addition, we collaborate with the Freedom Colleges Foundation to organize Four Freedoms Meet Up.To organize the Four Freedoms Awards, the Roosevelt Foundation also collaborates with Invitado, the Protocolbureau, Unlimited Productions, Van Maarel Event Styling, Maison van den Boer and Taste Culinair.
Who are the laureates?
During the Four Freedoms Awards, five (international) freedom fighters are honored for their efforts to guarantee freedom and defend human rights. On our website you will find an overview of all laureates who have received an Award in Middelburg.

Four Freedoms Awards starts at 11am and ends at 12.30pm, followed by lunch until 2pm.Four Freedoms Meet-Up starts at 3:00 PM and ends at 4:30 PM, followed by networking drinks until 5:30 PM.The message with your entrance tickets will contain further information about your attendance.
