Willem Adolf Visser 't Hooft was born in 1900 in Haarlem. He was secretary-general of several Christian youth organisations. As the first secretary-general of the World Council of Churches, Visser 't Hooft linked ecumenical church communities with many churches from developing countries and communist Eastern Europe. He died on July 4, 1985.
