Chancellor Helmut Schmidt received the International Four Freedoms Award in 1988. He received this award because he was a great statesman, for the integrity of his administration and his wisdom. In doing so, he had a clear goal: freedom for human beings. Schmidt also had an important role in controlling and reducing nuclear armament.

Helmut Heinrich Waldemar Schmidt was born in 1918 in Germany. He was a politician and economist. From 1974 to 1982, Schmidt was Chancellor, a period during which he succeeded in solidifying and expanding the connection between reunified East and West Germany. The Chancellor before him Willy Brandt laid the foundations for this in the Ostpolitik. Schmidt died in 2015 in his hometown of Hamburg, Germany.
