Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was born in Liberia in 1938. From 1964 to 1971, she studied accountancy and economics in the United States. Since 1971, Johnson Sirleaf has worked in various government positions in Liberia and for the United Nations. Before becoming the first female president of Liberia and Africa in 2005, she was assistant minister of finance.
