On April 4, 400 young people met up in Middelburg and discussed Roosevelt's Four Freedoms and what freedom means today. During the Four Freedoms Meet-up, organised by Stichting Vrijheidscolleges and the Roosevelt Foundation, Dutch celebrities Anniek Pheifer, Jeangu Macrooy, Nanoah Struik and Katrien van de Linde shared their personal vision and stories about freedom with young people. Presenter Evelien Bosch discussed various themes considering freedom with the Freedom Speakers and 400 young people from all over Zeeland. Human rights, gender, climate and the history of slavery were central themes during this edition.

Anniek Pheifer discussed the seriousness of the climate crisis. Jeangu Macrooy told his personal story about the impact that the Dutch slavery past still has on many people of colour today. Themes such as freedom of gender, identity and self-determination emerged from the story of Nanoah Struik. Katrien van de Linde defends human rights worldwide and shared her stories from her role as director of Human Rights Watch during an interview with presenter Evelien Bosch.

In action!

In the afternoon, all participants made an immediate impact in collaboration with the Young Impact Foundation. They undertook action for a theme that they consider important through lessons and freedom challenges. Examples of the challenges are a clean-up campaign in the neighbourhood, a collection for the Zeeland Clothing Bank and making colourful bags incorporating the themes of gender and diversity.
