The Freedom from Fear Award was given to Prime Minister Olof Palme in 1986 for his outstanding achievements for the United Nations. Because he was assassinated earlier that year, someone else accepted the award on his behalf.

Sven Olof Palme was born in Sweden in 1927. After his military service in 1947, Palme went to study law at Stockholm University. There he joined the Swedish Social Democratic Party (SSDP). From 1969 to 1986, Palme was leader of this party. In 1967, he became education minister. Palme was Prime Minister of Sweden from 1969 to 1976 and from 1982 to 1986. In 1986, he was shot on the street after visiting the cinema with his wife. Palme died soon after.
