Peter Alexander Rupert Carington, sixth Baron Carrington, Baron Carrington of Upton, was born in 1919 in the United Kingdom. He held several important positions inside and outside the United Kingdom. Lord Carington served in the British Army during World War II. He played an important role as a tank commander during Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands in 1944. Lord Carington remained with the British Army until 1949.

Lord Carington was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1979 to 1982. He then became the secretary general of NATO in 1984. He was also chancellor of the University of Reading and chairman of the Bilderberg Conferences. In addition, Lord Carington was a member of Queen Elizabeth II's Privy Council. After his term at NATO, he became president of the Yugoslavia Peace Conference in 1988. Even after leaving foreign policy, Lord Carington continued to sit in the House of Lords in the United Kingdom. He also worked in business and for a time was president of the auction house Christie's of London International. Lord Carington died in 2018 in Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom.
