He acquired wide working knowledge of conditions in Third World countries. In the 1980s he was sent by the Archbishop of Canterbury to Iran, Libya and Lebanon as his envoy to seek the freedom of western hostages. In 1987 he was himself captured. In November 1991 he was finally released. For his bravery and unwavering fidelity to God's command that showed the world again how a single individual, sustained by faith, can transform disaster into an opportunity to advance the work of the Lord.
