It is with great concern that the Roosevelt Foundation learned about the conviction of Four Freedoms Awards Laureate 2020 Maria Ressa and Reynaldo Santos Jr. by a regional trial court in Manila on June 15th 2020.
With Maria Ressa the Roosevelt Foundation is strongly committed to promote the respect for the freedom of the press and the freedom of speech and expression.
Together with the freedom of religion, the freedom from want and the freedom from fear, the freedom of speech and expression was formulated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1941 as a basic human right for everyone, everywhere in the world. The four freedoms were incorporated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
The Roosevelt Foundation considers these freedoms to be preconditions for a sustainable democracy and a dignified human existence.
We will continue to follow the legal process and developments connected to the case. The Roosevelt Foundation wishes Maria Ressa and her colleagues courage and strength in their search for justice and their continuing fight for freedom of the press.
