After his study of theology, he was ordained a priest in the Anglican Church and became the first black General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches in 1978 and Archbishop of Cape Town in 1986. He chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. For his successful contribution to the campaign against apartheid and his commitment to social justice and harmony in the new South Africa.
