As a lawyer, journalist and political leader he waged a life-long struggle against totalitarianism suffering physically from the fascist regime. After a political career he was elected President of Italy in 1978. One of the world's most respected statesmen he has been a partisan for democracy, for individual dignity and opportunity, for concord and harmony among nations.
