Upcoming Four Freedoms Events 2010

 

Saturday, May 29, 2010 is the day of the official award ceremony of the 2010 Four Freedoms Awards. This year, the European Court of Human Rights is the recipient of the International Four Freedoms Award. The Freedom of Speech and Expression Award will be bestowed upon Novaya Gazeta, the Freedom of Worship Award will go to Asma Jahangir and the Freedom from Want Award goes to Maurice Strong. The Freedom from Fear Medal will be awarded to Gareth Evans.

 

In the months preceding the award ceremony, several events will be organized highlighting Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms and the award winners: the Four Freedoms Events. With these events the Roosevelt Stichting and its partners hope to reach a wide audience, emphasizing the importance of the Four Freedoms, as well as their relevance in today’s world.

 

 

FREEDOM IN MUSIC – May 5, 2010 – Liberation Festivals

From April 28th on, 16 students from the conservatories of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and 8 students from American conservatories will form four bands and compose music with the Four Freedoms as the theme. The resulting compositions will be performed at the Liberation Festivals in Den Bosch, Zwolle, Rotterdam, Assen and Vlissingen on May 5, 2010. These festivals commemorate the liberation of the Netherlands from the Nazi occupation in World War II.

SCIENCE CAFÉ FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND EXPRESSION – MAY 19, 2010, 19.00, ZEEUWSE BIBLIOTHEEK

On May 19, Roosevelt Academy, Zeeuwse Bibliotheek, Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant and Free Voice will organize a Science Cafe on the freedom of the press in Europe, Indonesia, the United States and Russia. Ernst Jan Rozendaal will lead a discussion, aided by stimulating propositions, videos, chats and blogs. Among others, former editor of Algemeen Dagblad and current director of Free Voice, Jan Bonjer, will discuss his experiences of covering the relationship between the press and politics in Russia, while reporter Wendy van den Hurk examines the freedom of the press in Indonesia in the past decade, as well as the future of citizen journalism.

ROOSEVELT NATIONAL DEBATING TOURNAMENT – Finals May 26, 2010 – Roosevelt Academy Middelburg

For the second time, the Netherlands Debating Institute and the Roosevelt Academy will organize a national debating tournament for high school students in university-preparatory school, as well as students who follow international or bilingual education. Participants are invited to debate on subjects related to the Four Freedoms. Following in-class training in preparation of the tournament, the finals will take place on May 26, 2010 at the Roosevelt Academy in Middelburg.

ART AS A TOOL FOR FREEDOM, WEDNESDAY MAY 20, 2010 / 08.45-21.30 -  ROOSEVELT STUDY CENTER, ABDIJ 8, MIDDELBURG

The Roosevelt Study Center, the Drvkkery, and the Zeeland Museum organize a symposium on Art as a Tool for Freedom. The “teach-in” offers examples of artists who helped advance freedom in various parts of the world and in different periods. Activist artists explain how their artwork inspired groups to challenge repression. They trace their inspiration back to Franklin Roosevelt’s Public Art Program and translate it into contemporary art. Zeeland artist Iris de Leeuw will launch her freedomarthouse project.

SYMPOSIUM SUSTAINABLE FUTURE LEADERS – MAY 28, 2010 / 10.30-16.00 – ATRIUM HOGESCHOOL ZEELAND, VLISSINGEN

In early February, 25 students of the Roosevelt Academy and 25 students of the Hogeschool Zeeland set up a Sustainable Future leaders program. The students take courses on sustainable development and the psychology of sustainable leadership. They are challenged to think of sustainable solutions for ten practical social problems. On Friday, May 28, the Province of Zeeland, the Roosevelt Academy and the Hogeschool Zeeland will organize a symposium at which these students will present their solutions. Their proposed solutions will be discussed in a panel, which will include Mr. Maurice Strong, laureate of the Freedom from Want Award 2010 and co-founder of Earth Charter which will celebrate its 10th anniversary in June 2010. The winning idea will be implemented.

 “HOW FAR IS STRASBOURG FROM ZEELAND” WITH JEAN PAUL COSTA AND EGBERT MYJER, FRIDAY, MAY 28, 2010, 1 to 5 p.m., CONCERT- EN GEHOORZAAL, MIDDELBURG, AND

PRESENTATION OF THE RESULTS OF THE COMPREHENSIVE HUMAN RIGHTS SURVEY

“What is the importance of Strasbourg for the protection of rights in the Netherlands?”, “What does the European Court of Human Rights mean in daily life?”, and, “Is Strasbourg too far away?”. These questions, and others, are the subject of a symposium on May 28th this year. The Roosevelt Academy and the Zeeuwse Meesters are responsible for its organization. President Jean Paul Costa and the Dutch judge in the ECHR, Egbert Myjer and Winnie Sorgdrager, Wilhelmina Thomassen and Arjan Hamburger will debate with each other and the audience about the meaning of the European Convention on Human Rights in the Netherlands.

 

During the symposium, Professor dr. Barbara Oomen will present the first results of the Comprehensive Human Rights Survey.

AWARD CEREMONY FOR THE ZEELAND FOUR FREEDOMS AWARDS, FRIDAY MAY 28, 2010 – 4.30 p.m., DE DRVKKERY MIDDELBURG

At the initiative of third-year students of the Roosevelt Academy, a local Four Freedoms Awards ceremony will take place, in cooperation with the Provinciale Zeeuwse Courant. Just as in 2008, the population of Zeeland will be encouraged to nominate local initiatives for one of the Four Freedoms.
