Four Freedoms Award

Born in London, United Kingdom, in 1894. He held prestigious parliamentary and cabinet positions for almost fourty years. From 1957 to 1963 he simultaneously held the positions of Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury. For his role in the victory over tyranny in World War II, his vision of a unified Europe, his courageous recognition of the 'winds of change' in the former colonies, and his efforts to stop the nuclear arms race.

Freedom of Worship Award

Born in Mühlhausen, Germany, in 1927. Since 1954 he served the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thuringia as pastor, superintendent and bishop. In 1983 he organized the celebration of the 500th anniversary of Luther's birth. In recognition of a spiritual life which has demonstrated selfless dedication to the power of faith.

CHRISTIAAN F. BEYERS NAUDE

Freedom of Worship Award

Born in Roodeport, South Africa, in 1915. Minister of the Dutch Reformed Church. In the 1960's Naude formed an ecumenical group called the Christian Institute to establish contact with black Christians. He became one of South Africa's most outspoken critics of apartheid. For loving his country and rejecting apartheid as an immoral policy.

Freedom From Want Award

Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1938. She has made 12 films for Ingmar Bergman. Appointed a UNICEF Ambassador of Goodwill in 1980, Ms. Ullmann devoted much of her time to the work of the United Nations Children's Fund. For representing the international conscience, bringing love and sustenance to the despairing.

BRIAN URQUHART

BRIAN URQUHART

Freedom From Fear Award

Born in Dorset, United Kingdom, in 1919. Since 1946 on he has served the United Nations in various capacities, among others as Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs. He has directed peacekeeping forces in de Middle East and Cyprus and various humanitarian relief operations. For his role in international peacekeeping, his exemplary skill and creativity in diplomatic negotiations and strengthening the United Nations.

SIMONE VEIL

Eleanor Roosevelt Centennial Award

For her commitment to a united, peaceful and democratic Europe and her personal courage sustaining the tradition of Eleanor Roosevelt. Born in Nice, France, in 1927. She was Minister of Health from 1974 to 1982 and responsible for steering through Parliament social legislation. From 1979 to 1982 she was President of the European Parliament.
