ART AS A TOOL FOR FREEDOM
MAY 20, 2010 ROOSEVELT STUDY CENTER
The Roosevelt Study Center, the Drvkkery, and the Zeeland Museum organized a symposium on Art as a Tool for Freedom. The “teach-in” offered examples of artists who helped advance freedom in various parts of the world and in different periods. Activist artists explained how their artwork inspired groups to challenge repression. They traced their inspiration back to Franklin Roosevelt’s Public Art Program and translated it into contemporary art. Zeeland artist Iris de Leeuw launched her freedom arthouse project.
