MARY ROBINSON

International Four Freedoms Award

Born in 1944 in Ballina, Ireland. After her studies, she became the youngest professor of law in Ireland and the first female president of her country in 1990. In 1997 she was appointed UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. For her service as the ‘People’s President’ and her ceaseless efforts to champion the rights of the poor and marginalized both at home and abroad. This award is also meant as an inspiration for her difficult task as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Freedom of Speech and Expression Award

Cable News Network was founded in 1980 by Ted Turner. It quickly became the world’s premier television station for international news promoting the realization of a ‘global village’. For creating a world-wide awareness of the achievements, tragedies, and aspirations of people everywhere and for exposing violations of human rights around the globe.

THE MOST REV’D DESMOND TUTU

Freedom of Worship Award

Born in 1931 in Klerksdorp, South Africa. After his study of theology, he was ordained a priest in the Anglican Church and became the first black General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches in 1978 and Archbishop of Cape Town in 1986. He chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. For his successful contribution to the campaign against apartheid and his commitment to social justice and harmony in the new South Africa.

STÉPHANE HESSEL

Freedom from Want Award

Born in 1917 in Berlin. He joined the French Resistance during World War II and served in various functions to create a strong United Nations. For his many services as France’s representative to international organizations he was appointed Ambassadeur de France in 1981. For his distinguished diplomatic career in service of the United Nations and human rights and his compassion for those forced to flee their homes.

Freedom from Fear Award

Founded in 1995 in Canada by teenager Craig Kielburger after the hideous murder of a young Pakistani campaigner against child slavery. This organization mobilizes young people in all parts of the world to secure the rights of children as ratified by the United Nations. For its dedicated effort to end the enslavement, brutalization, and oppression of children everywhere in the world.
