International Four Freedoms Award
Born in 1939 in Rotterdam. After his study in economics, he worked in business until he started an impressive political career in 1973 as Minister of Economic Affairs (until 1977) and Prime Minister from 1982-1994. For his achievements as a political leader in the Netherlands, for his efforts to improve West European-American relations and to strengthen the European Union, for his contributions to the World Trade Agreements (GATT) and his help to rebuild the energy resources of the former Soviet Union.
