ALESSANDRO PERTINI

International Four Freedoms Award

Born in Stella, Italy, in 1896. As a lawyer, journalist and political leader he waged a life-long struggle against totalitarianism suffering physically from the fascist regime. After a political career he was elected President of Italy in 1978. One of the world's most respected statesmen he has been a partisan for democracy, for individual dignity and opportunity, for concord and harmony among nations.

Freedom of Speech and Expression Award

The independent daily newspaper El País was founded in 1976 as Spain emerged from forty years of authoritarian rule. It played a crucial role in the establishment of Spanish democracy. El País has embodied the principle that Freedom of Speech and Expression is fundamental to the well-being of democratic institution.

BERNARDUS ALFRINK

Freedom of Worship Award

Born in Nijkerk, the Netherlands, in 1900. He was made a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church in 1960 and entrusted with a powerful leadership role in Vatican Council II. He was chairman of Pax Christi, the international Roman Catholic peace movement. He has taught that the survival of civilization depends upon our commitment to peace and the noblest ideals of Christian love are our true shield against violence and despair.

BRADFORD MORSE

Freedom from Want Award

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, United States of America, in 1921. He served six terms in Congress until he became Under-Secretary General of the United Nations in 1972. As Administrator of the United Nations Development Program (1976-1986) he efficiently led emergency operations in Africa. He brought passionate commitment to his responsibilities into the United Nations and translated its ideals into action.

OLOF PALME

Freedom from Fear Award

(posthumously)

Born in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1927. He served as Prime Minister of Sweden from 1968 to 1976 and from 1982 till his assassination in 1986. The United Nations designated him as its special mediator in the war between Iran and Iraq. He contributed significantly to the discussin of arms control and the elimination of the nuclear threat to Mankind. His life was a long striving to devise ways and means to safeguard the future of humanity.
